CONWAY,
Arkansas (February 19, 2024)—ϲ welcomes artist to campus this week for
class visits, discussions with faculty and students, and a live performance and
artist talk in historic Ellis Hall (building 20 on the current campus map). The performance and talk,
set for Thursday, February 22, 2024, from 6 to 8
p.m, is free and open to all.
King’s guitar-based audio project comes
to ϲ as a companion to the visual art in his exhibition Useful Friction, which was installed in Ellis
Hall in September and will remain through the current academic year. It will be
on view for those attending the February 22 performance and talk.
“Untight” is an improvisation-driven sound art project created
and performed by King, an Arkansas-based artist and musician. King combines a
microtonal electric guitar with a digital effects array to create compelling,
immersive listening experiences, accompanied in live settings by projections or
other visual elements.
Steel
Center Director and Professor of Philosophy Dr. Jamie Dow is the curator of
this exhibit and performance.
“Sam King’s paintings from Useful
Friction will be featured this week in my Aesthetics and Contemporary Art
class,” Dow said. “King helped curate the art theory readings we’re discussing
this week in the course. We’re looking forward to the performance, the artist
talk, and to the conversations that develop about relationships between
expressions in ambient music and abstract painting.”
